After receive new artificial eye, patients will need to revisit the ocularist every six months for polishing because the protein deposit is buildup on the surface of the artificial eye which cannot be removed with ordinary cleaning. Whenever discharge is being formed it is important that the eye socket is cleaned regularly.
There are few tips about caring and handling the prosthesis:
- As the prosthesis is made of an acrylic material so never store or clean your prosthesis with rubbing alcohol. Prevent from instant heat sources as it will be destroy it.
- Storage in strong solution should be avoided to prevent absorption of fluids by the plastic. If you remove your ocular prostheses, be sure to store it in water or soft saline solution. This will keep deposits for drying on the surface.
- To clean your prosthesis, use an antibacterial and antiseptic lotion products.
- Your ocular prostheses have a colored red mark on it and in most cases the mark goes up in time of insertion. If you are in any doubt, consult your ocularist.
- Remove the ocular prostheses only as necessary. Too much handling can cause socket irritation and result in excessive secretions.
